Took my SBH to the range today. Fired a box of 44 special, followed by twelve rounds of 44 mag. On the eleventh round, the bottom corner of one of the factory grips split off. I fired one more round and YEEOOOWWWCH! the broken edge tried to take a chunk out of my hand. End of range trip.

I'll post pics later this evening.

Stopped and picked up a set of Hogue grips for it, since that was what was available at short notice. I'll settle on what I want to put on permanently later.

Wow I can't believe you shot a 44 blackhawk with a broken grip. I only shoot mine with a glove on. That had to hurt.

The grip is Diamondwood-a laminate made of dyed birch layers. You can use super glue to reattach the piece. Sand it smooth after the glue drys. Make sure the hole in the grip is not binding on the pin.

The dimpled Hogues are the most comfortable rubbers you can get. The harder diamond pattern Pachmayr's will act like 20 grit sandpaper on your palm after a couple of cylinders full.
The oversize wooden target grips sure do make a long day of plinking a lot more comfortable. I went thru several of the 7 1/2" and 10 1/2"ers till I realized the dbl actions with the little holes along side the front sight made the 44 a pleasure to shoot all day. With today's ammo panic situation, reloading is almost mandatory.

I have two extra sets of originals laying around they go to the ones with the dragoon style squared off trigger gaurd in rosewood or a set of new houge rubber finger slotted if you are interested. I would let any set go for $20 plus shipping.

My Ruger Blackhawk 44 has some pretty bad fitting grips. They can really hurt my hand if I don't wear a glove

Looks like they trimmed the grips due to a flaw. You can see it on the left rear corner of the grip.
