Bored so I figured I'd melt my cast rejects, did 1/2 a pot and had about a 1/4 left in plastic ice cream container---so I dumped it in-visualize this-----container is over lead pot upside down, bullets fall in pot---there's a .22LR in bottom-as I'm about to lift container -BOOM-lead flys but luckily 90% contained by container-WOW,,,turned off pot, cleaned up,and once again thanked the Lord for saving my stupid ass.

Glad your okay @zant

Life around here wouldn't be as good without you 👍

I had a similar experiance with moisture in the container (one time). Steam bomb blowing molten lead everywhere. If its one reason to ever wear eye protection smelting lead is it.

I had a car 30 years ago that the cigarette lighter was vertical in the center console but I never had the actual lighter. I kept change in the ashtray and didn't have a fuse one day when a penny fell into it but I had a piece of wire that would work just fine. I was heading home one night and the headlights dimmed so I looked down into the cigarette lighter to see if there was another coin in there. I saw a 22 shell in there starting to glow red! I yanked my head over next to the drivers side window and then it went off. Found the split casing on the dash the next morning but never did find where the lead went. At least it didn't explode in a pot of molten lead like you.

I invented steam power while casting once. The handle on my dipper fell off so I left the lead on the fire while I made a new handle. I should have been faster, the dipper had sufficient time to cool sufficiently so the perspiration that dripped into it on that hot summer day didn't evaporate before I plunged it into 5lbs of lead. I had eye protection on which was completely covered, threw them off in a flash and confirmed I wasn't blind then I took inventory. I was burned where I had clothes covering me, mostly chest and shoulders but bare skin wasn't even affected at all. That's where the sweat must have worked to my advantage serving to blow the lead away as it evaporated. Somehow I have resisted the temptation to cast naked.

Wow...I've had some close calls with a furnace full of hot lead but nothing like some of ya'll!! Friday I was casting some 255 gr. KTSWC's and I did flip the thermometer out of the pot and stupidly grabbed for it. I have a very slight blister on the heel of my right hand, just below my thumb mostly because it didn't take me long to look at the thermometer. Luckily no splatters all over the place.

Man Zant, that is a close call and glad that you are okay! I have a little scar on my left eyebrow from looking down into a pot of molten lead just as a drop of sweat hit it.

Wow Zant and 72! Please understand I'm not making fun of you. And congrats for playing outside the box. The books warn of the steam bomb, but not the ammo bomb.😁 Glad you are both OK. And yes I've had to thank THE LORD for saving my ass.

It's kinda funny now,but it just shows how if the lead had hit my eyes, your whole life can change because of 1 min of not paying attention when dealing with dangerous hobbys,I going to wait until tomorrow for explosive fun and pay 100% attention.

So far the worst I've had happen is dropping a hot sprue inside my sneaker with no socks on. back in the 70's unbeknownst to me I dropped a .22 LR on shag carpet. My wife found it with the vacuum cleaner. It didn't do any damage but it scared the crap out of her.

She gave me a good talking to or three. :ROFLMAO: She thought I did it on purpose because I used to pull .22 LR bullets and sprinkle the powder in her ash tray.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Back when I did smoke, I did that without thinking and then brought the ashtray and put it on my nightstand. I always smoked one right before going to bed, and when I went to crush out the butt, boy did I get a surprise and a good burn on my hand!!
