This was passed down to my wife from her grandfather. He was a police officer so we are guessing it’s a service revolver, but not really sure. Any feedback is welcome. Thanks!

Not sure which model but it was designed for use with smokeless powder ammunition based on having the caliber markings on the left side of the barrel.
The barrel itself had been cut down and the sight replaced.
Thank you for the information!As John said- H&R. Not what would generally be considered a "Service revolver". Please note that .38 S&W and .38 Special are NOT the same cartridge, and do NOT interchange.
