U headstamp on 22's

    i have had some 22 long rifles that had a U for the headstamp. someone today gave me some shorts that have a U headstamp. i wonder what it is. i thought it might be UMC, does anyone know?

    are you sure its a U and not a C

    C would stand for cci, got me on the U

    Yep, A U headstamp would be for UMC...Union Metallic Cartridge.

    Not sure how long ago they made the switch, but even "Remington" brand .22lr had the U headstamp for quite a while before they switched to the script "Rem" headstamp. I think that happened sometime in the early-/mid-80s.
