So i have what I believe to be is a 38 s&w. U.S revolver company. 5 shot, safety hammer. Break top. The serial is 887. Stamps in the trigger guard and under the grips and above the cylinder all match. 887. And on the right side under the grips looks like a 1 or I.. I would like to know what I have. I can' seem to find anything. The grips were U.S black hard plastic with two screws.. any help is very appreciated. Thanks.

Based upon the serial number, it was made in 1910. All US Revolvers started with serial number 1 that year, and it wasn't until 1917 that they added a alphabetic prefix.

Iver Johnson made US Revolvers using surplus 2nd Model Safety Automatic frames after they releases the 3rd Model in 1909. They were sold thru the mail and are considered a black powder frame. They are not safe to shoot with modern smokeless ammunition.

These are a blast to shoot and you can still find black powder .38 S&W online. If you reload or know someone who does, you could also load some.
