1968 near the DMZ VIET NAM....my outfit...Chief

NavalMobile Construction Battalion#5 constructed a total of 18 timber towers varying in height from 10’ water towers to 50’ observation towers during the 1967-1968 deployment. Most of the towers were built on-site, but some were assembled at Dong Ha and helo-lifted to forward areas near the DMZ or to other remote locations. In this one instance the CH-53 helicopter “fragged” to lift a 30’ observation tower to C-4 (aka Charlie-4/LZ Bowie) approximately 17 km north of Quang Tri and 2 km inland from the ocean/5 km NW of the Cua Viet Naval Base (YD 314-724) The helicopter proved to be underpowered for the mission. Difficulties were experienced in lifting the tower from its construction site at Dong Ha and the tower was dropped and destroyed due to the pilot’s flying too low near the placement site at C-4. Eventually a replacement tower was lifted to C-4 via CH-54 “Flying Crane”
