My father was a Sargent in the Marines back in the early 50's. I was wondering if there was any way I could trace his service, where he served, what units he was in, those kinds of things. I SO regret not writing down all these things when he was alive to tell me. Wish I had paid closer attention.
I just want to know more about this aspect in the life of the greatest man I ever knew.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try ancestry.com, I found my great grand fathers service record with Teddy Roosevelt's rough riders. Having a soc. # or service # helps.

Depends on Uncle Sam's whim every 3 yrs.
I attached a form you can mail in. It should be free for next of kin. What you want is his DD 214 at a minimum. At any rate, the 214 is the key. I recommend you call first.

If you need any help, contact you local Veterans Service Office. They can help with any paperwork and can be of assistance in many other ways as far as contact info, etc.
