I was given a gun that belonged to my father-in-law, unfortunately he is no longer with us so I need some help. From the butt plate I can tell it was purchased at Herter's (Waseca), but I am not sure on the caliber or the value (from the diameter of the barrel I'm thinking maybe it's a 30/30). I have attached a picture of the firearm. There seems to be some letters/numbers on the receiver but they are mostly covered by the scope mount. Any insight or information would be appreciated. Thanks.

It appears to be a sporterized US Model 1903, which if in its original caliber would be a 30'06. The Herter's buttplate isn't necessarily an indicator of the seller, since I believe Herter's also sold stocks and stock blanks for those interested in sporterizing military rifles.
