I know, it's a question that's been asked and answered many times in the history of firearms boards, but maybe some newbies will see the post and learn something.

I'll start: Glock 21 with 230gr Federal HydraShoks and a Glock 27 with 155gr Winchester Silvertips(soon to be Georgia Arms +P+ 155gr Gold Dots)
Remember: It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, then it's just fun!

My .45, usually 200 gr H&G #68 lead SWC IPSC handloads, or else hardball factory.(usually military)
Those IPSC loads make GREAT defensive loads, and if anybody questions me, I can say with a straight face they were only "target loads." Plus, I have over 100,000 of them down range from 3-100yds, I know what they do.

My EG Makarov, "stacked" 93 gr FMJs and 95gr JHPs. (both shoot same point of aim at 10 yds;I never trusted JHPs to 'expand' under 1200fps, which is why I "stack.")

Beretta 9mm 92F with these really cute little bullets. Brass, copper and real pretty blue heads to them. But it just says R-P 9mm Luger.

Either that or some pretty hollow points - but I can't reload those as they are not brass.

Actually I responded the quickest way, I loved your post, my first attempt in "real life," then decided to change it to a post because you might get pissed at me, corrected it quickly thinking you'd never know, but didn't know you can't hide the evidence! Sorry T, I would NEVER tamper with content, especially yours!

"Cute Little Bullets?" Boy, T, I can tell YOU didn't march in any "Million Mom Marches" today!

9mm Luger CLB +P...Kinda like the sound of that! Think there's a market for pastel colored ammo for women? Heck, they even sell pink tools for gosh sake!

You know, designer colored polymer handguns with coordinated accessories might just work, hmmmmmmm....

Allright - just what do you think you are doing editing my post polish?????????

OK...I came in here to see if I could learn something and found a bunch of stuff I don't have the slightest clue about.

It's interesting to see what everyone else carries though. Now it's time to go bug Alpha into telling me what everything is!!!

LTS,

Why an edged weapon and not a small handgun in summer?
My 60 fits nicely in my front pocket in summer.

Tac, several reasons...one being, that I have carried an edged item for around twenty years, Texas did not have CHL for a long time. Another is the fact I am always in and out of business`s during the day, post office, banks, PD`s, DPS, Hospitals and many more that do not allow them. During the winter, we are not(job related) take it off....put it on....take it off......put it on.....after doing this 10 or 15 times a day....I think you get the point. Hell one time I reached for a touch....and no weapon....heart sank for a moment....then realized....in the car. I am versed in edged and handguns....always carried an edged when carring a handgun. Texas is hot and muggy....being a sensitive 90`s type of guy and that it gives me a rash on my little skin it`s just much easier. Although I would not want to face off a bunch of badies, I firmly believe...if it is three or less(provided not armed with a gun, although "one" with one is ok)....I will go home and tell the story. Though it does not go bang...it is deployed with faster speed and is effective, producing a much more than just a small hole....I do not recommend this for anyone who has not studied the edged....but the human body is comprised of many area`s that will disable it and put it firmly on the ground with a very slight energy, whether amped on drugs or not.

Never forget..."handgun vs knife senario." Death in 1.5 seconds from the "average" guy. I am learned in this art, not bragging......just learned.

You can't carry concealed in Missouri, so I carry a kielbasa shoved down the front of my --- never mind.

Hungarian PA63 in 380ACP loaded with hollow points during warmer weather with lighter clothes, Star PD45 loaded with ball ammo in the winter. Of course, never concealed.

If its warm enough for a jacket, Glock 20 with silvertips.
If its not, but I can wear an untucked shirt, P99 or Sig 229 2-tone with 9mm 127gr +p+ Ranger Talons...the 9mm that thinks its a 357sig
If I cant untuck a shirt, Kel-Tec P-32 with a Cor-bon in the chamber and the top round in the mag, the rest filled with gold-dot. If I load it all the way up with Cor-bons, it rim-locks to ofter to feel comfortable.

If I can hide it I prefer my full size high capacity 9mm EAA Witness filled with Hidroshocks. I know people assume EAAs, just because of the price, must be crappie. That's so far from the truth! My 9mm and my brother's 10mm are tack drivers that are very reliable (no failures to date). I can put a swarm of 9s on a pie plate at 30 yards, and my brothers 10mm has very light recoil (much better than the Glock in the same caliber)!

My 2nd choice is my Glock model 33 loaded with Cor-bon 155 grain .357 sigs. Good if the target is up close.
OR
My hammerless Ruger SP 101 with 180 grain Winchester Black Talons in .357.
My choice for summer clothes now is a CZ 70 loaded with .32 ACP Silver Tips.

My future choice is some kind of compact .45 ACP

Re: What gun(s) do you carry and what's it loaded with
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that I can legally carry concealed, I find that I carry less than when I did not have my CCW. However this situation is caused by my present health situation in that I do not get out as often now as I used to. Now let me explain -- prior concealed carry was normally done during deer hunting season while hunting on my own property. There were a few exceptions to this, such as banking large sums of money ($5000.00 or more at a time), overnight travel that required staying in a hotel/motel, or long distance travel out of state for any period of time (and yes, last year I carried concealed to both Virginia and Missouri, and will do so again this year on the trip to Texas)

At any rate, when I do get out and about, I carry my Kahr K40 .40S&W topped off with Federal HydraShok's in an inside the waistband rig on the right hip.

For back-up I have a NAA Mini-Revolver with 1 5/8in bbl loaded with CCI Mini-Mag .22mag hollow points. This little outfit fits nicely in the back pouch of my Helios 300 portable Liquid Oxygen tank carrier.

Other choices I have are a Bersa Thunder 380 with Cor-Bon 115 grain HPs, Colt Commander and Llama MiniMag in .38 Super, EAA Witness in .45ACP/38 Super and a Coonan 357.

My new primary carry is an HK USP .45 with 230 gr. Golden Sabres in it, 2 spare mags same ammo. Also have been known to carry my Para P14 Stainless, also Goldern Sabres, 2 spare mags same ammo. Once in a while, Beretta 96 with 180 gr. Hydra Shoks, 2 spare mags. The Beretta is currently for sale, debating on replacing it with on of the polymer XD 40's that Springfield is importing, or another HK USP in 40 S&W.

I'm saving up for one of those nice thin new glox for summer carry, a full-size hunk of metal doesn't go well with shorts and a polo shirt.

BTW, anyone know what the AF stands for?

I have a 9mm Sig and a (dont laugh, it's been good so far) 9mm Bryco. The Bryco is pretty much just a 'ranch gun' and the Sig stays in the truck. I take the test tomorrow for my CHL and soon as it arrives I'll be carrying either a Glock 32 or 23. I havent decided yet.

Some funny business going out side?
I'll pick up my one of my 44's or 12 gauge during deer season. What ever is ready to go. If it works for deer it should work for "varmits" and it'll be what I'm most familiar with at the time.

I'm pretty new to this particular forum and I see the last post was almost two months ago, but what the heck...

I carry a Kimber Custom 1911 .45ACP with two spare Wilson Combat magazines. I've been carrying Cor-Bon's 165-grain +P "Pow'rball" round until recently switching to Winchester's USA brand 230-grain JHP load. I've also carried good old 230-grain FMJ on more than one occasion, but I prefer JHPs.

I normally carry my Kimber in a strong-side pankcake-style holster from KC Custom Gunleather and an off-hand side double mag pouch from the same maker. I can pack all of the above with good concealment under a light jacket, "photo vest," blazer, or even an untucked shirt. I resort to a Galco fanny pack if the mood strikes (which isn't too often!)

I'm looking to soon back up the Kimber with a .38 Special snub-nose revolver and am considering packing same in a Kramer Confidant "holster shirt" if not on the belt on the off-hand side.

This thread is ancient, but I thought that I just had to add my 2 cents.
Unfortunately, I live in WI where concealed carry is still a dream (although hopefully not for long). Soon I will have my FL permit, and I travel a fair amount to IN, so I will be carrying regularly. My setup of choice - which I can comfortably hide under an untucked shirt is...
2 G23s in Galco Concealed holsters carried at 5:30 and 6:30 loaded with 13 rounds of Winchester Ranger SXT 180gr. each and 2 13 round magazines in the related mag pouches on my left hip.
I top it all off with a Surefire E2 flashlight and a Cold Steel Gunsite I folding knife. (all obviously on quite a sturdy belt - also by Galco)

Hi, Dale. I like the sound of your two-gun setup for concealed carry. I need to learn more about the Glock model-numbering scheme...beyond the 17 and 19 I'm lost!...what caliber is the 23 in and is it full-, mid-, or compact-sized?

I've pondered complementing my five-inch 1911 in a similar fashion to what you describe but with either a .38 snub or a second 1911 in either three- or four-inch trim.

I'm in Alabama here...thankfully we've had CCW for a while and now we have reciprocity with a number of other states including Florida.

Here's the info on the G23 - it is a compact (mid-size) with exactly the same specs as the G19, but chambered in .40 cal instead.

Here is a partial listing for Glocks - I'm pretty sure that they are all accurate:

G17: 9mm standard
G17L: 9mm
G18: 9mm full auto
G19: 9mm compact
G20: 10mm standard
G21: 10mm compact
G22: .40cal standard
G23: .40cal compact
G24: .40cal
G25: .380
G26: 9mm sub-compact
G27: .40cal sub-compact
G28: .380
G29: 10mm sub-compact
G30: .45ACP
G31: .357sig (standard?)
G32: .357sig (compact?)
G33: .357sig (sub-compact?)
G34: 9mm (competition - long?)
G35: .40cal (competition - long?)
G36: .45cal (still not available?)

There are also compensated versions (ported barrels) available on some of these pistols now. They are denoted with a "c" following the number.

For many of these, all I know is the caliber for certain, but it's a start for you. I got this listing for you from members.aol.com/ROEOD4/ for the ones that I didn't know - no promises that they are all correct...

Springfield Milspec Loaded, in cool weather Small of Back, really hot weather - a fanny pack.

Load: 230gr Rainier HP, 9.0 grains HS6, WLP primer and a starline case. The thin jacket gives pretty fair expansion even at .45 velocities, and the relatively soft core hangs together better than a harder one would.

Depending on when and where:

Colt Gold Cup's (2) w/45 cal 230g Hydra Shock
Colt LW Commander w/45 cal 230g Hydra Shock
S&W 42 38sp w/125g Starfire

Kel Tec P-11 w/32acp w/Corbon's
NAA 22 Mag (2)w/WW HP's

Pick 2 from the top and 1 from the bottom and that the carry about 75% of the time. The other 25% is 3 from the top and 2 from the bottom.

Yo, mgjohn -

You must certainly be visiting the wrong area or interacting with the wrong crowd to have to carry 5 concealed weapoins 25% of the time.

Hope you never have to resort to using them.

I generally carry the Glock 19 stoked with Federal 124gr HP +P+ LEO or with the CorBon 124gr HP. I have carried the Glock in several rigs but I tend to return to the IWB type holters. When it is hot and humid I carry the KelTec P32 loaded with Fiocchi full metal jackets, they function flawlessly and with such a minor caliber penetration is important. I had the slide hard chromed on the P32 as the blue one started to rust from sweat, I tend to stuff it in a pocket mostly as it weighs practically nothing.
If you believe it is reprehensible to possess the will and means to repel a criminal assault...how can you rightfully ask another to risk his life to protect yours?

SIG P 220 45 ACP- First two Rounds are Black Talon 230 Grain. That's so the bullets wont go through all the walls on a miss. Rest of Magazine loaded with Winchester 230 Grain Full Metal Jacket. Figure by this time if the intruder is not down, he should be outside & moving fast & I would want to try to do serious damage to his mode of transport.

Don't know where you are from Dragon Bob, but there is one little thing to remember: If, as you say
Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the intruder is not down, he should be outside & moving fast
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

you are no longer in a defensive situation. The immediate threat to your life and limb has been eliminated by his departure. Any attempt by you to
Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
try to do serious damage to his mode of transport.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May wind up having serious consequences for you.

The general rule of self defense is to protect life, limb, and property and one cannot be protecting same if he is taking up an offensive role as a vigilante while chasing after a perpetrator.

Ruffitt is very right on this point: you are in deep doodoo if you shoot someone fleeing from you. If he lives, he'll likely get off and you'll do the time. If he dies you'll do even more time. Sounds like a lose lose situation to me. When the threat has ended so has your legal right to harm the attacker.
The fight for freedom is not fought overseas in distant lands with guns, missles and bombs. It is fought here with words, pen and paper and I fear, we are loosing it.

Dan Wesson Trooper with 148gr HP in IWB. 2 speed loaders.

Locking folder, right hip, high
Locking folder, right hip, low
Stilleto, right boot
Cuffs, back center waistline

Pepper, left boot
Pepper, key chain

That was when I was in So. Cal.
Now, in rural locale, only locking folders and pepper in boot for every day carry.

In the field, I carry my Ruger Blackhawk 6" Single Action Army copy. This gun is in .41 Remington Magnum and usually, if I'm not hunting, loaded with my own ".41 Special" load. Cartridges are shortened to .44 Special length and loaded light. 210 JHP @ 900-924 FPS.
It is Illegal for me to carry on the street (I hate Illinois)
but I would carry my Colt model 1903 "Pocket" in .32 A.C.P., if permitted to someday, loaded with Silvertips.

Shoot well

I carry a CZ 75B 9mm loaded with a Federal 115 grain hollow point +P load and my 45 Colt Ruger Bisley is usually with me in the woods. The load most often in the Bisley is a handload utilizing Sierra's 300 grain bullet at around 1100 fps.

I beleive in the theory that any gun is better than none. I carry a Guardian 32, Colt Mustang 380 or an AMT DA380 on my person. If I wear a coat I like one of the 380's and if without a coat the Guardian carried in my front pocket. I don't use holsters. I also carry in my car a 45 or 9MM just in case. Clean often and shoot often keeps everything working. In 70 years I have never needed one and I am thankful, but it's there just in case. riceone.

Old thread but I'm new to the board so here goes.

Tokarev in 9mm, good little pistol for me. It looks like a small thin 1911 to those who don't know what a tokarev is. I stack both clips with Hydra Shoks and silvertips, I carry it in a passport ambidextrious holster with a spare clip pocket.

I have an old S&W K or L frame snub nose .38, that I got some info from AntiqueDr. about it, that i carry in a plain old black nylon belt holster and keep gold dot HP +P's in the pistol and speed loader.

Smith & Wesson stainless k frame model 65 .357 magnum revolver with a 3 inch barrel in a Bianchi Accumold holster loaded with Triton Quik Shoks 125 grain hollowpoints or a Glock model 26 9mm in a Galco Royal Guard inside the pants horsehide holster loaded with Federal Nyclad 124 grain hollowpoints
Hi Logansdad, and welcome to TFF! Stick around and post often, you'll find a great bunch of folks here.
:D
Kimber Ultra Carry II Stainless with 2 extra clips. Ammo is Federal Hydroshocks, the first round in the mag. is a 230 gr. hardball just to show the courts I tried to stop the aggression without the
dreaded "manstopper hollowpoints".
Well, let's see:
I carry a Gold Cup series 80 that I built up from the gripframe and slide, in a Kramer belt scabbard having FBI tilt, loaded with hot (hot) 200 grain Rainier copper plated 68's and a Spyderco Police Model in a hip pocket. On the range, during classes, I carry the Colt in an Orca duty rig on an instructor's belt.
When I go "informal" I carry my 1954 grip safety Centennial (grip safety has been pinned out since 1954) in a coat pocket, loaded qith cast 173 grain Keith bullets loaded hot. This carry results in the world's fastest draw: No draw at all. Ignore the smouldering jacket pocket and concentrate on winning the encounter. Nary a jamup with that little hammerless model in all these years....been through a number of jackets, however.
I have a neat little K frame "K-Comp" Smith that I carry in an Orca rig, loaded with 170 grain fmj loads. The average person with a .357 tends to carry too light a bullet. A 170 will penmetrate a car or a target to a suitable depth to do massive damage. I have seen too many 115's and 125's fail to penetrate to a suitable depth. I still believe what Elmer Keith said in 1929 about his version of a .38 magnum (.38/.44 on an N frame): A light bullet moving fast is nice, but a heavy bullet moving fast is nicer.
One project for this year is to make up a swaging die that will re-form the nose of a 170 gr silhouette bullet to a swc style. Then I would have the very best bullet for the .357, ahead of a full load of slow powder.
Nope, I'm not afraid to carry my own handloads; been doing it since 1954. I've seen losts of factory fodder fail to lift off, but , since I double and triple check my carry loads and use only proven components, none of them have failed yet. I used to load in nickel plated cases, so the loads would look like normal factory fodder to a casual observer.
'Twerks fer me.

Glock 23 with "First Shot" 90 gr.frangible ammo in 357 SIG,J frame air weight with "First Shot" 110 gr Frangible ammo(Back-up).
other pistols- para ord. p-14, glock 19 Sig 229(40).all with "First Shot" ammo in them.
C&R:
Do you have autopsy X rays or photos of the terminal effects of "First Shot" ammo?
not yet:) have some gel shot's though, and when I worked at SIG arms Academy, the assitant director went deer hunting with his 229 in 357 SIG and took out 3 deer, one shot per deer, have pics of those.check out my web site www.candrammo.com,browse through it,has good info on frangible ammo, and pic of gel shot.
The site mentioned brings up a notice that it no longer exists.
My concern with light, fast, frangible bullets is that they are wonderful theoretically and they will kill a block of ballistic gelatin, but deer do not drive around in cars, nor do they hide behind them and shoot back.
Some real life data, such as autopsy material and notes concerning the kind and type of cover and concealment the bullet had to pass through before it struck the target is a necesity, for proper terminal ballistic evaluation.
The "Magic Bullet" has been with us since the muzzle loader days, but a proper, efficient bullet for self-defense still eludes us.
However, I'm as enthusiastic as anybody about new bullets. I good test would be to obrain a quarter of beef, wrap it in an old T shirt, sweat shirt and leather jacket and shoot it through some light cover. That should separate the hopefulness from reality.
Of course, you would have to get the beef autopsied by a veterinarian, rather than at the County morgue.
X rays would prove the worth of the round beyond any shadow of doubt, even though the detractors would say that a body with blood flowing is different than a dead piece of beef.
FYI, I just unloaded my latest magic rounds from my pistols after a test that led me to return to swc bullets. However, I'm still hopeful.
Then....and this is of the greatest importance...after a shooting with frangible bullets your lawyer has his work cut out for him.

try www.candrammo.com there is alot more to this technology that meets the eye,and I supposed that i could go into the rendition of why this is a good CQB round, and if I were to worry about an attorney, then citizens out there using the same type of technology would have to worry also I.E. glasser(leaves no trace for ballistics) The I.Q. bullet (also leaves no trace) just to name a few.But the way i see it is that if it is good enough for the Dept. of Energy and the Dept of Defense(which we got to sizable contracts from for Frangible ammo) thenI am not going to worry about my liabilities.
Lead works fine in a self defense load, however, you might want to consider putting a hole in it(Hollow point)
That's what I was saying: a frangible bullet will not pass through the thin skin of an airplane, so how can you expect it to pass through a leather jacket?
Expanding bullets are nowhere as eficient at passing through clothing without distortion as a solid swc.
If you had read Elmer Keith's books, you would know that this kind of debate has been going on since black powder shooters went from round balls to swc shapes.
You would be astounded at the latest forensic technology for linking a particular firearm to a spent bullet. It is no longer a matter of only rifling marks on the projectile.
And, finally, since there has not been a shooting with the current crop of frangible bullets, nobody can do anything but speculate what could happen in the way of terminal ballistics. If you recall the garbage that was printed when Glaser safety slugs first showed up on the market...most of which was later proven to be wishful thinking, you will get my point.
What the Air Marshals use in their pistols isn't much of a selling point; they used to load up with full wadcutters, and if some folks had their way, they would use rubber bullets.
Expanding bullets usually don't expand; they hit something solid and distort.
So, what is the perfect self-defense load? No definitive answer, we are ALL still testing and trying everything new that comes onto the market. Therefore, the amount of testing we have done and the results prejudice out thinking, so all of us have different ideas and hopes that our theories will work out for the best.
In that respect, the jury is still out...on my theories as well as yours.

okay,I'll give you a lesson on frangible,First it's a composition of 98% copper 2% tin,It's created through heat and pressure, hence you can make it hard or soft depending on the APPLICATION.Now,I have tested MY frangible round for the national pilots association, and the TSA.It will penetrate through the skin of an airplane, the concern for everyone involved(even sky marshalls) is that there is NO OVERPENETRATION,upon shooting a bad guy(for lack of better wording)they actually don't care if it goes through the "skin" of the plane, they can compinsate for that!!!!! Hell I've shot this round through every type of clothing that you can think of,yes even leather, but the whole point to all of this is the lack of over penetration, the lack of bounce back for CQB training and the lack of ricochet. I guess I could go on and on about some of my "clients" who use my ammo for self protection or alot of home owners who do not want to harm their loved once by an over penetrating bullet that goes thru walls, and YOU may think that it is alot of HIPE, but until you have tried it and given it your "expert opinion" then I guess it's no use to go any further with this discussion. Like my father always said "it's tough to teach an old dog new tricks" and :the fear of the unknown will kill ya.
See less See more
That may well be true for dogs, but it is a gross insult to imply that someone is the offspring of a dog, regardless of pedigree.
Make no mistake about it: If your loads prove out in my tests, I'll praise them in all of the publications I write for...and in classes I teach. And, I want to be scientific about the testing. In other words, all claims will be tried out and the results reported without prejudice. I have done that for thirty-some years as a firearms writer for several of the major publications and a few restrivted to only L.E.
Have you made a tape of your tests?
And, this old pistolsmith/Firearms Instructor has learned a lot of new "tricks" in the past few months.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen, - ( Pistolsmith and C&R AMMO)

You are both to be commended for the professional manner and ethics displayed during your debate on the aspects of the frangible bullet. You have both stated the convictions of your position in a clear, concise and gentlemanly manner. It is discussions conducted in this manner that make (or will make) The FirearmsForum THE best forum on the internet.

Pistolsmith, your request to C&R Ammo to continue the discussion via email is honorable; however is prejudicial to those of us who are following this thread in quest of further information.

It is hoped that you will continue your discussion here on the forum, with an open eye to forum decorum.

Thank you for your participation
Thank you SouthernMoss, I will contact him via his E-mail and explain to him what i meant. I do not want to take any more space up in this excellent forum to banter back and forth about opinions on ammunition.
Well....thank you guys for a most enlightening discussion, and for both of your well stated and intelligent opposing points of view.

Now....if only somebody would invent a bullet that goes exactly where I'm sure I aimed it....... :D
Pistolsmith / C&R Ammo,

Great discussion so keep it going. I think we are learning alot, I know I am.

My gunsmith works for DOE so I'm sure I'll end up with a few of these bullets to test in my 1911.
