I always did like the looks of those. Any idea what steel they were using back then?
I dont know the steel but it is stainless

Wow, thirty years?? I don't think I could do that. Too many choices in the world!
LOL I have about 50 other knives I cant resist buying some at gun shows sometime but I have carried this knife so much the handle material is almost worn away I bought a new one just like it about 10 years ago with the intent of replacing the old one but just did not change I guess I am just attached to the old one Us old folks can be that way I guess

but honestly, the old reliable 440A used in my 2000 Kershaw Blackout was always a joy to sharpen as it took a wicked sharp edge and held it for a very reasonable amount of time at work. Until I lost it a year later and then found it over 15 years later under some leaves in an outbuilding I was demolishing. The spring assist and inner liners were rusted out and the plastic had bulged some, but that treated blade showed only minor effects of all those years of neglect. I asked Kershaw CS if they could save the blade, since I'd always liked the steel and how it sharpened expecting to pay for many new parts. The replaced all those parts free and buffed the blade leaving the engraving still intact. Boy was I pleased and thanked them for their excellent service.

Nice knives (y) That's good to hear that Kershaw repaired the knife.

Shieldon in my pocket and in my work bag as a backup. Love my shieldon. Excellent company to deal with as well.
Shieldon knives are a great knife for those who are looking for a reliable and high-quality folding pocket knife that can handle a variety of tasks. However, as with any knife, it is important to use and maintain it properly to ensure optimal performance and safety.
The same PM2 I've carried for more than ten years. Can't beat it.

It's more like 7 years for me. Mine fell behind the front seat of my car and stayed there for a month or so. Thought it was gone. In my sadness, I ordered two clones, a PM2 and a Military. Oddly, the Chinese PM2 came with a longer blade, like I'd always wished the original had. Have you ever read why they designed it with the shorter blade when there was room for another 1/8 to 1/4" of length? I gave that one away when I ordered a K390 Endela and later found my Pm2. Actually, I like the Military and its 4" blade. The steel they used is probably a 7 or 8Cr13MoV, which isn't great, but decent enough for what I use this for. I once cut away all the grass and vines that clogged up my little gas cultivator with it and it held its edge long enough to get the job done. Not bad for a cheap knife. Now I only carry it when I go to the bank or a medical facility where you can't carry your firearm.

That K390 is some tough steel. In a moment of total absentmindedness, I washed it after cutting something sticky and just laid it in the drain rack with other dishes. How stupid. I cook with mostly carbon steel knives and certainly know better, but forgot that this was only 4% stainless and when I went back for it that night or the next day, it had etched the steel some after removing the surface rust. Now I have a permanent reminder unless I take it to my wheels and polish it off.

It is pretty slow going getting it sharp. I've taken it through 300, 600, 1200 and 3000 grit diamond plates and it is very sharp. I'm not sure if I will now buy some diamond spray or paste and fix up some leather strops to get it hair whittling sharp or not. It's certainly sharp enough now for anything I may want to do with it. Actually, the 300 and 600 grit edges would make for a very good working edge for most things we cut, especially cords of any kind.

K390 is a complex tool steel designed for the manufacturing industry. It's composition is: Carbon 2.47%, Chromium 4.20%, Molybdenum 3.80%, Manganese 0.40%, Vanadium 9.00%, Tungsten 1.00%, Cobalt 2.00%, and Silicon 0.55%. Its relatively small 4.2% chromium content is below the 13% needed for a stainless steel.

The powdered S30V steel used in the PM2 is much easier to sharpen and gives a nice working toothy edge at 600 grit taking way less time on the stones than K390. I doubt I'll buy anymore knives with those super steels that harden up to 65 Rockwell. Maybe if I needed a knife that held its edge longer, it might be nice. But the small amount of time needed for sharpening a more basic steel works out just fine for most of us. I still like a good 440C blade and even 440A or even 1095 steels have worked just fine for me over the years when I used a knife daily at work and home.

As long as the rust cleaned up, probably not terrible to have a little patina on there. It makes it yours, it's part of your story and it's part of yours. Imo there's something cool about that and it's why I've held on to my PM2. I got REALLY into knives a couple of years ago. I'm talking matched pairs of micarta sebenzas large and small with different colors of micarta inlays lol, silly old me. Going ham when all I need is found in my plain Jane s30v pm2, takes a scary edge that's easy enough to maintain. It's perfect.
Nothing fancy, it was my father's and now it is mine. I think he got it back in the late 80s, maybe early 90s.

Speaking of fancy, made me remember the Ron Lake knives. What an articstic craftsman. I stopped by his shop back when he lived in Illinois. He showed me around and one room was full of exotic horn and antlers. He said back then, he didn't have to shop for the stuff, that past customers kept sending it to him. I stopped in because I was making one myself out of leaf spring stock and he graciously sent me home with an assortment of polishing compunds. This was probably back in the early 1980s. Sadly, one of these is not in my pocket today 😢 there's no way I could afford his work. I saw one with sheep's horn and gold listed at over $14,000. Here's another beauty.

I collect knifes and I think I would rather have any knife from my father, over one that I only purchased.

I bought a Puma 'White Hunter' when I was in Germany 30 years ago. Paid around $95 for it and when I got back to Canada I gave it to my older brother as a gift. He passed away 3 years ago and I asked my nephew if he knew what happened to it. No one's seen it. I'd love to have it back, even if I had to pay full pull modern price for it.

Just an inexpensive knife one of my kids gave me. Spring-assist so it opens real fast. I have had it in my rear pocket now for about a year now.
