My grandfather gave me a Winchester Model 74, Serial # 1423. I cannot seem to find anyone who knows the year of this gun. Could someone please help me? Thank you

Looks like 1939 or maybe 1940. Couldn't swear to it, as I've bounced back and forth digging this up. They were made from 1939 to 1955. That sound you hear is my computer crashing and burning....Good Luck and ENJOY that rifle. Jim

Your gun may have a two digit year stamped on the bottom side of the barrel next to the receiver. You have to remove the stock to see it: take the inner magazine tube out first.

1939 is listed for the lowest serial number of a model 74 at this site:

Edit: I didn't see the previous answer; I was researching and composing mine.
