I have Henry Big Boy H012M .357
I put Skinner peep sight on it.

The problem I have is the front sight

The peep sight sets a little high on this rifle.
I tried to adjust it but the aperture screw will not go high enough.

I tried to buy a taller front sight from Skinner but the sight for my rifle is the same height as the one that came with the rifle.

Does anyone know where I can get a 3/8 dovetail front about .700 tall?

Thank you,
Dale

I think a call or email to Skinner might be in order. I checked the Lyman and Williams front sight charts, and theirs' seem to max out at just under .600". If memory serves me I believe Williams once marketed a front sight block - essentially a block with a 3/8 foot on the bottom and 3/8 slot on top - to allow for a fairly high front sight installation without the blade being unnecessarily fragile - which I believe .700" would be. Before going that route though I'd get in touch with Skinner.

I sent an email to Henry about the rifle shooting high.

The answer I got back confuses me.

"The rule-of-thumb for any rear-sight adjustment is that you move the sight in the direction you need the bullet impact to move. To shoot higher, raise the elevator; to shoot lower, lower the elevator."

If I am reading this right it saying to lower the rear sight to lower the bullet impact.
This is reverse of what I have been told.

OK... I think.

I will have to give this some thought.

Thanks for the replies.

OK. Is this statement correct?
Raising the rear sight lowers the front sight. Or in other words the front sight will move in the opposite direction of the movement of the rear sight.
If your rifle is shooting low then lower the rear sight.

If I want the bullet to go downward (shooting high) I should move my rear sight downward.
Is this correct?

I will try this tomorrow.

OK. I just had a mental vision of what you are saying.
GOT IT

Thank you for the replies.

BTW I am an old man with limited mental capacity. ;)

I believe I have read that with the Skinner sight it sometimes occurs that a taller front sight is needed....but evidently not often and I suspect that depends on the load and the rifle. My neighbor just put a Skinner on his ugly, laminated, Marlin with about an 18 in. barrel and that funky lookin' finger lever, (geez that is one ugly lever action rifle!!!), and he didn't need a taller front sight.

And I meet rzw's description!!

Latest update....
I went to shoot today.

Peep sights shooting about 2" high. All out of adjustment. Down adjustment.

Tried the iron sights they are adjusted all the way down.
The problem now is where to put the front sight in relation to the rear sight when shooting.

The iron rear sights are about 5/16" or so wide x 5/16" tall give or take.

I need to get a rear sight that allows me to put the front sight on target with out trying to figure out where it needs to be in the rear sight.

Possibly a red dot scope.
Got one on the 22 and I like it and so does the grand kids.

What is the standard scope mount call? The picinny thingy?

Thanks for all of the help. It sure helped to day.

I suggest taking a good Hunter Safety class. They will explain sight alignment, sight picture, etc.

OK...
I think I am getting the idea on sights.

I found out I have 1/2 buck horn sights. OK....
Next thing I learned is a sight picture. Interesting.
I need find a sight picture within my rear sight that suits me.
This kind of blew my mind a little.
Thinking over it sounds like a good idea to me.

Tomorrow, back to target practice and sight my rifle in to MY sight picture.

Thanks to all of you for the help.
I may actually lean how to shoot this rifle.

Update.

I have a milling machine so... I milled the Skinner sight dovetail block down .025.
The thread on the aperture is 40 tpi so this will give me one more turn down.

I test shot it today and it is about 1" high.

I ain't got no more I can mill off.

I was wanting to get the sights down to where I could put the front sight gold dot on the target. However if I put the target on the top of the front sight it is very close. May just go back the the iron sights.

We call that the 'pumpkin on a post' sight picture, bullseye on top of the front sight blade.

BTW, what range are you shooting from?
