I don't see why pewter would be inaccurate because it's lighter, higher velocity maybe. We moderns shoot solid copper slugs in muzzle loaders in states that have banned lead and copper is lighter than lead and it's accurate.
I'm not saying it's inaccurate. I'm saying the fixed sighted guns would now be off.

If I take my Thompson Center Renegade, that I have sighted in for a 490 lead ball, and I use a copper ball, I have to resight the gun. Because the lighter copper ball will not shoot to the same point of aim as the heavy lead ball.

So if they ran out of lead and they decided to use pewter, and they went to the range and resighted all their guns in, that would be one thing. But they didn't. They shot that Indian with a lead ball, and then they shot that other Indian with a lead ball, and they shot that Indian over there with a lead ball. They've been shooting Indians with lead balls for 5 hours. And now they get a pewter ball. And they miss. Because the lighter pewter ball is going faster with the same powder charge and it's kicking less so it shoots lower.

Changing ammunition in the middle of a gunfight is not a real great idea.

As my wife says, it's a movie. Suspend logic.

Television show.
Okay, so I remember an old Starsky & Hutch episode where they were, of course, in a gun fight. At one point they forgot to cut out when one of the "behind the scenes" armorers actually traded revolvers when Hutch ran our of blanks.

So, yeah, I suspend a lot of logic on the Boob Tube too.

I would have to assume that whatever salt that you cannot dig out must be soaked out, and I know that stings.
Sting is an understatement, the ones on the inner thigh were the worse. Soaked out with a towel, soaked in hot water. I was real careful sitting down for a few days.

When I was a kid, around 10 (many-many years ago...😉😄), my friend and I were "borrowing" some tomatoes from an old man's garden. He came busting out of his shed hollering, "You lil' s#$#s better get your butts out of here or I'll fill 'em with rock salt!!!" Then he started literally shooting...right at us!!!😳
Rock salt or not, having heard him say that as he squeezes off a round or two directly at us, it definitely had the desired effect, and made us true believers!!😄
100% true story.✋

How about lentils?
"Lentils are a great source of dietary fiber." As far as ammunition, lentils uncooked could be lethal. Lentils cooked and properly seasoned, does make a fantastic Bean Dip. Mama said "Don't play with your food, son"

I finished up the testing just a little while ago before sunset. I picked up the lentils but decided they would go better in a soup.
I thought about using air soft pellets, there round, 6mm and fairly sturdy.
The shell held 38 balls of air soft pellets, but only weighed 3.5 grams heavier. So I used salt as a filler and that brought weight up to under a half ounce, and with the more weight there wasn’t as much burned powder left in the barrel. I shot this 38x29 inch piece of cardboard at 15 yards with a full choke, there where 30 pellet holes on the cardboard, and as you can see it was spreading fast.
I think it would make a good non lethal pest round for critters, or a water Mellon thief round. Lol

Oops forgot to put picture up.
