There is a guy on Outdoors Trader (GA based forum) who has this S&W model 28 for sale. He is asking $880.00 for it. If anyone can tell from these pictures, is it worth the asking price

These are all of the pictures he provided.

Good ones that show some wear go for $650ish in today’s market. That’s on the higher end of what they go for but it looks unfired  What does he say the history of the revolver is. I’d probably try $700 but if it is as good as it looks from the initial information……I’d probably give the $880. They don’t make them like that anymore and those are fine revolvers.

I tend to think reblue. A Smith & Wesson, untouched, and you can barely if at all see the line around the side plate. Because they put the side plate on the gun and they polish it together.

With a reblue, the side plate gets polished separately, and you can generally see a very distinct line all the way around it.

I can see the edges of that side plate clearly. Down above the trigger, running up behind the cylinder. Should not be able to on a original gun.

My opinion.

Be careful with this one. It has been shot the trigger and hammer shows ware but the cylinder shows no cylinder lock lines and blowing it up shows many other signs that I would say it has been reblued. Look VERY carefully at the lands and groves to see if any are worn.
The grips show ware and look carful at the lines on more then one spot they are not straight but criss cross.
The price is up to NIB but this IS NOT NIB.

To me it seems like original bluing. This gun has been fired and $800 is a little steep, but if you like it and you have the money then it is not expensive. Plus it has been well cared for. I'm leaning more towards you buying it. Nothing wrong with a pinned and recessed cylinder and tapered barrel, and it would make an excellent giveaway prize when you hit 51,000 posts.

What Alpo, and goofy said.
I enlarged the pics, and there was remnants of a polished out drag line in the Cyl, buggered side plate screw. What Alpo mentioned about the sideplate gap, whoever did it, was aware of that telltale too. If you look close, he did his best to blend it, but left polishing lines that match from sideplate to frame.

Looks righteous to me. 28 has the duller bluish grey than the other NS. Hard to tell from picture. If original $800 is not a crazy price. I have 4”ers in that condition with letters that I would want that much for. The 6” 28 is getting harder to find, still quite a few 4” to be had. You ain’t going to find nice 28s for $600 anymore. A lot of them going into custom jobs in 41, 45 & 45acp.

Cylinder has turn line. Cylinder also has nice square edges on locking notches. Recoil shield is hard to see but if gun had high round count with magnum loads it would be imprinted. I can’t tell if marks are buffing or just wiping marks in oil WD or like. How did it come out in the end as far as reblue, and other negatives ? Pictures are helpful but unless professional done the glare and shadows on surfaces don’t help much on fine calls. I can’t take pics with what I have.
Most gun pics are more like window dressing even though shot from several angles.
I buy a lot of S&W revolvers on line and have short list of what I want to see. If seller can’t provide, no sale. I don’t give allowances for plausible deniability.
