1911s OVERRATED?

I don't usually post, but the other day while browsing gun sites I came across a video they called the most overrated guns. Won't name the website because I actually like them. Video was hosted by what I would call fanboys, everything flashy, shiny and new is great. Long story short, 1911's and AKs rated one of if not the worse weapons, because they at old and boring. I carried a 1911 my entire 23 year in the Navy. Never once had a FTL, FTE or a misfire. Been through, jungle, swamps and deserts, never a problem, But because it doesn't have a Red Dot, light, or a million round mag it's old and useless. Red Dots IMO suck, lights, the guy you are shooting at loves them, large mags, yeah maybe it's the biggest weakness, that is why the Hi-Power was developed. I own 5 1911's and most calibers, Looking for number 6 in 38 Special. Just pisses me off when one of the greatest engineering accomplishment. 1911's are not Overrated, they are one of the best weapons available.

Now AKs overrated? One the best, if not the best, point and shot rifles ever make. Easy to maintain, nearly abuse poof. Because they don't normally have all the 'modern' bells and whistles, they are overrated? Some of these modern rifles can't handle a little dirt let alone a dust storm.

Feel better now. 😀

The 1911 as like the BHP are classic handguns to me are like vintage tools. Each is handcrafted like an antique screwdriver with a wood handle inlet into the handle. They are narrow enough to not take up space yet wide enough for most hands to grip. I don't have anything against modern guns. They seem wider and are like the Stanley screwdriver with plastic handles that grip well. The modern guns are fine but the 1911 has a heritage which for some was reliable during their grandfathers (or great grandfathers) time to their fathers and today.

I am an old guy, no kidding. One of the phenomenons I've noted and considered over time is the 'new is better' assumption.
I presume the assumptions here are several, to wit:

"Single action cocked and locked pistols are more dangerous than double action trigger systems".
"9x19mm rounds are more better than .45 ACP rounds".
"Any design in the 22nd Century is more better than anything adopted in 1911".

I'm not so convinced. But like I said, I'm an old guy.

The 1911 'endures' for a lot of reasons.

History is probably a big part of it however it's design was essentially 'ahead of it's time' and it remains as the 'cornerstone' by which NEARLY all other semi auto pistols followed for their designs.

Are there 'better' guns than a 1911? Not necessarily. There are guns that of newer designs & materials and in some cases might be more 'practical' than the 1911 in certain circumstances but the 1911 remains as a recognizable example of all semi auto pistols.

There are NOT too many products that have maintained their basic design for as long as the 1911 - and have become the most 'copied' of that design.

Well old man I ain’t no young rooster myself. I’ll take the 1911 and 45 ACP any day as long as action is reliable. Sure I love my S&W 325 Thunder Ranch revolver in 45 ACP tuned as a Performance Center product. Not as easy as 1911 45 ACP with spare magazines. Ole Skool I as definitely am, and a late learner on the 1911s. My buddie in AK who was a mentor told me stay away from them autos I saw in the pawn shops—they jam and are finicky on ammo. Cut my teeth on Blackhawk 44 mag but years later discovered 1911 thanks to a retired US Army armorer who turned me on to 1911s where I learned about the38 Super. Love 19 they are not outdated.

Good to make your acquaintance, sir. Somedays those young'uns speak a different language.

The Lord set me up to buy a S&W model 25 DA revolver that already had the barrel cut back to around 4" or 5" and the front sight remounted. I like double action revolvers that work well in double action.
Not as easy as 1911 45 ACP with spare magazines.
I'm retired and am not as likely to face a human wave attack. Probably two or three at the most.
