Rust in the barrel

I sent a .22 Compact Smith and Wesson back to Smith and Wessen

It wa gone about 2 months.

I got it back today and when I was cleaning it I noticed what looked like rust on the patch.
No black just redish color.

I ran about 20 or more patches down the barrel and still see the redish stain on the patch.

I am sure it was not there when I sent it in.
As best I can see down the barrel it lookes a little pitted.

Will this affect the operation of the pistol?

Thank you,
Dale

I would be on the phone with S&W wanting to get an answer as to why they sent you back a firearm with rust in the barrel. Also. When you call ask for that departments manager. I had a problem with a Walther P22 that had a factory defective barrel that for 3-1/2 years was told they didn’t have a replacement barrel for it. Then I saw on Walther’s website that they had the barrels for sale. I got on the phone and railed on the department manager and told him that I’m a member of seven different firearms related forums and will in no uncertain terms tell the world how crappy their company is and won’t stop until I can financially harm the company. That finally did the trick and it was replaced in the matter of a week. The reason I bring up Walther is that S&W are the U.S. importer of Walther. But with S&W, I’m sure they will try and claim it came to them with rust in the barrel. Do not relent if you know you’re in the right.

What did you send it in for? Sometimes new/replacement parts have a protective coating of lubricant. Could that be the reddish stuff you see?

If it's really pitted, it may affect accuracy. Most bbls are SS anymore, so it seems odd that it would have corrosion so bad that pitting occurred. I would take pictures and then shoot it, clean again and compare before/after.

I just bought a Ruger American Rifle in 22 WMR and as I was mounting the scope, I noticed on the receiver there is a recess where they installed a pin on the detent that lets you remove the bolt, it looked like some brownish, red, rusty goo in there. This is not grease, I work with grease and I know what that looks like.

So I took a QTip with some cleaner on it and wiped it out and it started to come out. I then took a pick and some cloth and worked for a few minutes and got the area clean and was able to see there was no rust and the bluing was fine.
Then as I took the stock off to make the trigger adjustment, I found more of that rusty looking crap under the trigger group. It was under the barrel area and the majority of it wiped off but I had to take a cloth with some Hoppes on it and really work to get the spot off of the bluing.

I don't know what this is, maybe something they use when they drive pins in place, but dang, they need to do a better job fit and finish when they box up a fire arm.
