I am having trouble with a CVA .50 cal hawken rifle. It is taken to strikes to set the cap off. The first one to seat it and the second one to fire it off, I am using magaum caps as the standerd one would not fire the power. Question is should i replace the nipple or grind it down.

Yes, replace the nipple - and what brand and size caps are you using?

If it's a matter of seating the cap on the nipple, ram it home with your thumb. Or carefully lower the hammer on the nipple, and push it. Try different caps - they behave differently.

You shouldn't need magnum caps to fire bp or most of the normal subs unless you're using pellets. Loose powder is better. The CVA takes #11 caps. make sure the cap is seated. A capper wont seat caps. Don't be afraid to put pressure on caps. They're not pressure sensitive.

If the nipple is not damaged, being careful not to mash the threads, put the nipple in the chuck of a high speed drill and then while the drill is spinning, use a sharpening stone to work it down by gently laying the side of the spinning nipple on the stone. Will only take a few seconds and work it down bit by bit until a cap seats itself with thumb pressure. If you ruin it, nothing lost, nothing gained--you were going to replace it anyway.
